X2 had cutscenes that you couldn't watch without cringing, and X3 then just gave up and mostly resorted to audio samples and even text boxes over barely animated portraits with randomly moving mouths. The game has a very rich lore, but the plots in the games themselves were mostly basic and terribly presented. After X3:TC the universe is pretty much torn upside down, so many things will work very differently (most importantly FTL travel) and the old storylines will probably become merely background fluff.
